Gatwick’s New Target to be Leading Low Carbon Airport

Reducing emissions has long been on the agenda for man airlines and airports but Gatwick Airport has announced this week that they want to become the UK’s leading low carbon airport by 2025.  Ambitious, you might say, but with the appointment of Simon Sturgis, an expert in carbon emissions analysis, it may just be achievable.

Sturgis Carbon Profiling is a consultancy providing services on sustainable, low carbon environments and has been appointed to reduce the airport’s carbon footprint, including the possibility of a second runway being built should they get the go ahead from the government this summer.  A roadmap detailing how this will be achieved is due to be published later this year including ways in which construction at the airport in the future will be fully sustainable and generate the lowest carbon footprint possible.  The airport’s carbon footprint and impact on the environment will be carefully considered by the government with regards to the new runway debate and their decision.  This latest drive is ahead of the airport’s pledge to cut their carbon footprint by 50% by 2020 in comparison to 1990 (the Government’s target was by 2025 for the country).

In addition, Gatwick also announced that they will be phasing in a range of economic incentives that they hope will encourage the use of electric cars and vans ahead of their long term initiatives to move their apron/runway vehicles to an all-electric fleet.

Yes, the airport’s plans are ambitious but Stewart Wingate, CEO at Gatwick Airport, is determined that the airport will be developed in a way that is as environmentally-friendly as possible and become the most sustainable airport in the UK.  A lot of building work doesn’t always consider the impact it has on the environment around them, particularly large scale developments, and it is certainly encouraging to see an airport take such steps to reduce their carbon impact.  Sturgis promises ‘imaginative and ground breaking plans’ that could lead to even greater, game-changing initiatives to reducing carbon across the UK.
