Heathrow airport on Tuesday cancelled flights as hurricane Gonzalo went ham over Britain. Passengers, in their thousands had their flights cancelled, delayed and others suspended temporarily. British airways whose HUB is at Heathrow cancelled a total of 20 flights. This is in addition to the flights cancelled by other airlines. 80 flights in total out of expected 800 fights were cancelled at Heathrow. An additional strike by German pilots brought the number of flights cancelled at the largest airport in Britain to 110. The passengers had been warned that they would be hit by delays well ahead of time. Earlier Heathrow had given a warning of the cancellation of 10% of flights due to the hurricane. The decision for cancellation had been discussed between the airline and passengers to be rebooked on later flights.
The train services to and from Heathrow and other major airport were not left out either. Trains especially those from London and those from Stansted airport ran an hour late. The high winds coming with the hurricane forced a stop to the Thame cable car and ferry service. The Hurricane has left a trail of destruction in Bermuda where it passed through on Monday.
The Met office gave a forecast of strong winds OF UPTO 75mph and heavy rainfall to be expected in the wake of the hurricane. British airways said it had agreed to effect the changes in its flight schedules following a request from both Heathrow and the National air traffic services. BA together with its other 20 large airlines say they are sorry for any difficulties and inconveniences caused by the poor weather conditions and said they would do everything possible to minimise its effect for the passengers.
