BA Postpones Scrapping Free Food and Drinks as Legal Battle Looms

British Airways will   delay the removal of free food forpassengers on short- haul flights, following a passenger’s threat to sue the airline. BA was set to scrap complementary foods and drinks during the peak of summer holiday at London’s City Airport. One angry passenger who had booked tickets before the measure was announced, as had thousands of others, wants to take legal action against the airline.

Last September, 40 year-old John Barber from Peterborough bought eight tickets for him and his family, for a Majorca trip in August.  Seeing as BA’s move to scrap free refreshments would cost him an extra £156.80, he decided to sue BA at a small claims court. The flag carrier had been offering a free drink, snack and sandwich, but since January began to charge passengers for Marks & Spencer food consumed on its short-haul flights.

Consumer campaigners expect Mr. Barber’s bold move to trigger thousands of other claims. BA has now postponed the introduction of paid-for meals at London’s City Airport until October. Speaking to The Mail, Mr. Barber said: “I suspect the only reason they changed the cut-off date is because they did not want to go through a court case and open the door to lots of other claims. However, that doesn’t mean they are in the clear. We also need BA to make absolutely clear to everyone...exactly when this change is going to come into effect."

Marc Gander, of the Consumer Action Group, added: "BA was clearly in the wrong. It acted very unfairly and in breach of contract. Anybody who brings a small claim like this should be congratulated." ABA spokesman said: "We now offer a range of M&S sandwiches and salads for under £5, and snacks from £1. Customers say they prefer the new selection.”
