British Airways to Allow Your Bags to Fly on Their Own

British Airways is offering a new program where you can send your luggage ahead of you to the airport, so you can, in essence, travel luggage free. This is something that many people will agree is well overdue. The service is expected to begin 26th, October.

The way it works is by booking a slot through the app AirPortr to notify the airline that you have luggage to pick up. Staff will come round and weigh your luggage, place a bar code on it, and wrap it in an anti tamper bag. They will then transport it to the airport, where it is removed from the anti tamper bags, scanned through security and placed on a flight where it will be waiting for you at the carousel at your destination.

Baggage must be booked in a slot no later than 7 hours before scheduled departure as well as not exceeding British Airways’ 23kg weight limit. There may be some concerns if certain items in the luggage might be confiscated, but if you follow the rules and know what exactly to pack, it should be a breeze. There is a definite benefit to being able to leave with only your carry on, knowing your luggage will be there when you arrive, barring any major issues.

If you like the idea, this service will set you back about 20-30 GBP in Central London, and about 40 quid outside in the London suburbs as far as the M25. That is the price for a single bag, and it is only for departures from Gatwick, Heathrow, Gatwick, and London City airports.
