Donald Trump’s Victory: The Effects on US Travel and Britain’s Travel Industry

Donald J. Trump’s shocking victory has been met with a myriad of reactions from Americans and the world at large. His election spells out uncertainty for the United States and Europe as well, owing to the controversial stances he took while on his campaign trail.

The business world, especially the travel industry will definitely see a lot of changes.

British travelers may be in luck as the US dollar fell sharply overnight, making the Sterling stronger. If this trend continues, travelling to America and other destinations whose currencies are tied to the dollar will offer a financial boost.

European airlines also stand to benefit from a plummeting of the dollar, seeing as aircraft leases and fuel are priced in dollars.

Despite the fact that Mr. Trump, a travel-industry tycoon, enjoys a significant dominance in the industry, his proposed ‘trade-wars’ policies may work against him and other operators. Airlines and hotels are likely to employ cost-cutting measures in a bid to survive the turbulence expected if the US economy shrinks.

In the long term however, travelling to the US may become more difficult if Trump is to make good his threat of barring certain groups of people from entering the country. A campaign press release in December 2015 said: "Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on."

On the other hand, his proposed strict passport control could also mean crippling some US states such as Nevada, California and Florida, which are heavily dependent on tourism.

On a lighter note, Trump is a fan of Britain so suffice to say we’re on his good sides for now. After all, he plans to create the finest golf course in the world, in Scotland. That aside, the impacts of a Donald J. Trump presidency on post-Brexit Britain remains a matter of wait and see.
