There was a recent story about a drone nearly hitting to airplanes as they were attempting to land at Southampton Airport recently. One was three miles away and the other was about a wingspan, resulting in a near accident when they became aware of the drone.
There have been other incidents reported about drones being used to annoy and destroy property. There is also the increased volume of drone users as they are not as expensive as they once were so now there are lots more inexperienced users with them.
The problem comes from lack of knowledge and inexperience with the devices. They are aviation equipment and as such there are a certain set of rules and regulations that must be adhered to. Police are finding this is not the case. Many newbie drone owners are purchasing them without proper training or knowledge of the rules.
Police have no issue with people with low experience enjoying the drones, as long as they know if they break the law, they will be prosecuted. So it is extremely important they familiarize themselves with the rules according to their devices. And definitely do not fly them close to a plane that is trying to land. Or anywhere near an airplane. That is dangerous and reckless and could get you sent to prison.
The police believe everyone should enjoy having their drones, just learn the rules, avoid airports and airplanes, and use common sense. They can be a wonderful tool and a lot of fun. Just remember to educate yourself and stay away from airports and planes!
