Heathrow Airport Named for Most Delays

In a recent survey, Heathrow was voted London’s most tardy airport. The data is from October 2015 and Stratosjet.com provided the information. There are a number of contributing factors, such as weather, flight cancellations, maintenance, security issues, and air traffic control.

London Heathrow, Europe’s busiest airport suffered 4072 delayed and 336 cancelled flights. Many were due partially to heavy fog. The numbers have made it the airport with the most delays in the UK as well as in Europe. In comparison, London Gatwick suffered 2172 delays and 129 cancellations, while Manchester Airport had 985 delays and 142 cancellations only.

Lufthansa had the most cancelled flights with 12 times more than any other airline, with the problems with strikes over pensions and retirements. British Airways was third, and Easy Jet eighth.

Most airports that had high numbers of delays were generally high on cancellations, but that doesn’t always hold true. Some airports have a very high number of delays but not cancellations. For example, Barcelona El-Prat Airport, Paris Orly Airport, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, and Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport. They all had fewer than 100 cancelled flights but experienced more than 1,00 delayed flights.

So, with the holiday season upon us, just expect to experience even more delays and possible cancellations. Although to be fair, with Heathrow being the largest and busiest hub in Europe, delays and cancellations would be higher there simply based on the sheer number of flights they have coming in and out. Despite the high numbers, Heathrow is still considered one of the best airports in the UK.
