Heathrow on way to achieving their sustainability goals

In an annual report published by Heathrow Airport that maps their progress against their goals; set in 2013, there are a number of sustainability goals that were set to promote the airport as a ‘responsible business’, and the report shows that they are making very good progress against their 2020 sustainability goals.

Heathrow report the achievement of one of their goals - 10 years operation of the Heathrow Clean Vehicles Partnership.  The partnership is made up of 22 companies that have helped the airport to reduce emissions by sharing best practice and trialling cleaner vehicle types.  Other goals that they have reached are the completion of T2, which is now believed to be the “most sustainable terminal powered by 20% renewable energy”, the investment of £750,000 into the community around the airport, and the creation of over 500 new jobs.

The airport has also launched a new campaign: “Responsible Heathrow 2020”.   It has been developed to bring their current sustainability projects together in order to reduce the airport’s impact on the environment.

Heathrow’s Sustainability and Environment Director said recently: “Responsible Heathrow is a clear and compelling plan which sets stretching targets to 2020 and we hope it will encourage our airport community to work with us to improve our performance year on year.”

The three keys areas of Responsible Heathrow 202 are supporting economic growth and investing in communities including creating new local jobs alongside national economic development; looking after Heathrow’s passengers and people including a passenger’s experience, safety, and Heathrow’s staff; and reducing environmental impacts including climate change, local air pollution, noise impact, waste and water.
