Underground Trains to Reduce Journey Times between Liverpool and Manchester to 7 Minutes

Imagine travelling from Liverpool to Manchester in just seven minutes? You may not have to imagine that in the near future as it’s likely to become a reality.

Direct City Networks (DCN) plans to install a “hover train” expected to be “the world’s fastest underground system,” to run from Liverpool to Hull in just 29 minutes..

DCN300+ would use magnetic levitation (Maglev) system where vehicles hover above tracks and are propelled by electrically charged magnets. The mechanism substantially reduces friction and increases speed up to 350mph, making it the fastest train in Europe.

MagLev trains would be put into a tunnel across the North.

DCN has submitted a proposal to Transport for the North, the government body tasked with improving the region’s transport network.

According to the ECHO, maglev could work alongside Northern Powerhouse Rail, the proposed high-speed rail link from Liverpool to Manchester and Leeds that could connect to HS2.

The DCN scheme would have a line connecting Manchester and Leeds which could be extended to Liverpool and Hull, easing freight traffic. The system would use passenger pods or capsules which could leave as often as every 60 to 90 seconds.

A spokesperson for Transport for the North said: “TfN has been provided with information by Direct City Networks (DCN) PLC regarding a proposal to initially link Manchester and Leeds with a high speed ‘MagLev’ connection, with the possibility of this being extended to Liverpool and Hull.

“We have responded to DCN, highlighting several areas where we think substantive additional development work would be needed before any proposal could be given more detailed consideration.

“Our current priorities include the preparation of a long-term Strategic Transport Plan for the North and development of the Northern Powerhouse Rail proposals, which will identify plans for infrastructure needed to transform the region’s economy by offering fast, frequent and reliable transport around the North for both passengers and freight.”

The initial Manchester to Leeds line could cost between £2.2bn and £3.7bn.  DCN says the line could boost the GDP across the two cities by £1.3bn a year and create 48,000 jobs.
