NATS Innovates In Noise and Fuel Reductions

As London airports come under fire by protestors concerned over the environmental dangers their proposed expansions will bring, NATS (National Air Traffic Services) has published record breaking results on their work reducing CO2 emissions and noise pollution.

NATS head of Environmental and Community Affairs, Ian Jopson, has spoken of the fantastic year they have had in reducing CO2 emissions and enabling fuel savings.  They have done this through new FPM (Flight Profile Monitor) technology measuring UK flights, enabling them to improve flight performance in near real time.  The technology can track aircraft performance at any stage in its flight and enables NATS to determine the flights efficiency through looking at various detailed characteristics. Such technology has enabled NATS to reduce CO2 emission by more than 600,000 tonnes through this innovative procedure as well as improving noise reduction.

NATS is working closely with the airport industry in reducing emissions, saving fuel, and improving noise reduction.  Between July 2014 and April 2015 their work ensured that over 39,000 flights were successful in reducing noise due to CDO (Continuous Descent Operations).  This aircraft descent technique also reduces fuel burn and emissions.  The success of CDO is now being championed throughout the UK, including London Airports, which goes towards the promises being made to local communities that noise and pollution can be reduced, despite the increased flight traffic expected through the use of an extra runway.

Recently NATS were shortlisted for BitC’s (Business in the Community) award in “Engaging Customers on Sustainability” for their Continuous Descent Campaign.  Ian Jopson is pleased that their achievements have been endorsed and demonstrates that they consider the wider impact of everything they do in the industry.  Their concerted efforts with UK airlines in ensuring best practices for the environment bodes well for the future in a time when more people are using air traffic for business and pleasure than ever before.
