Passenger Numbers Soar At Glasgow
16 - Oct - 2014

Passenger numbers soar at Glasgow.

Glasgow airport is experiencing its 20th month on month of growth. Golfers and golfing enthusiasts who are coming for the Ryder cup have partially contributed to this increase in numbers of 783000 this September as compared to 764650 in September of  2013. Around 20000 more travellers used the terminal in September compared to a similar period last year.  Glasgow city has been the beneficiary of a number of big conferences which has also contributed to the increase in passenger turn over at the airport. Airline bosses of Air France-KLM, US airways and Emirates have all reported an increase in bookings in their business class seats.

October has started off with encouraging news for the airport. Virgin Atlantic plans to increase its capacity on the Orlando service and another airline. Canadian airlinewest jet plans to introduce direct flights to Halifax next year. The airport also expects numbers to increase following the launch of Ryan air’s new hub at the airport by the end of October. When Ryan air does launch its flights later in the month they are expected to add around 850000 more passengers annually. For Glasgow, September is its best month yet, analysts have put this September’s performance as the best summer in six years.

Despite the huge success in international flights at Glasgow, there are approximately 5000 less domestic passengers transiting through the Airport. The airline bets on Ryan air to up these domestic numbers as well as increasing connecting flights to the wider Europe. These healthy future prospects of the airport are in contrast with the struggling airports among them Blackpool airport whose final flights flight today. Theirs has been a story of dwindling passenger numbers and inability to attract international flights. Glasgow is the offing to unseat Gatwick as the airport of choice airlines.
