Scottish Airports Demand Consideration in Expansion Plans

With the recent starts and stops with Heathrow Airport, the UK’s Edinburgh Airport would like to compete for the overflow that is part of the request for a new runway at Heathrow.

Edinburgh’s Chief Executive, Gordon Dewar suggested that Scottish airports are no longer feeder airports for those in the south, such as Heathrow, London City, and Gatwick. He states Scottish airports are more than equipped to handle more capacity as well as having the space to add another runway.

With Edinburgh being owned by the same company as Gatwick, Scottish airports have stated they would like to be considered for expansion or as an alternative to any airports in the south. They feel as if they are being shortchanged and overlooked. Edinburgh airport is very connected with flights going to and from Europe, the Middle East, and America. They feel they are as capable as Heathrow, and as part of the UK, should be considered.

As talks about runway additions and expansions continue, we should keep our eye out for whether or not UK officials will look to the north as concerns over aviation air and noise pollution continue to be a concern and one of the major hurdles for those that want to see more capacity at Heathrow.

Perhaps, it might make more sense, and will help increase tourism to the northern parts of the UK; it is part of the country and should not be overlooked. Again, fingers crossed, and we will keep our eyes open for any new developments.
