TfL to Reconsider English Language Test for Minicab Drivers and More benefits for Uber Drivers

London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Tuesday met with representatives from the Licensed Private Hire Car Association to negotiate better terms for minicab drivers.

Rules that were recently passed require Minicab drivers to undergo an English language test that would cost £180 for a written essay and a speaking test.

After the meeting, Transport for London (TfL) announced that the English language test would be reconsidered.

TfL said it would also now review the regulations, to “make satisfying the requirement as simple as possible”. The Evening Standard reported.

On Wednesday, TfL said a new deadline of April 30 has been set for drivers to prove their competency in the English language.

The British Dyslexia Association said it would be “impossible” for some private-hire drivers to pass the new test.

Steve Wright, the hire car association’s chairman, said thousands of drivers had feared losing their income following the new rules.

In other news, Uber drivers will now receive better terms such as sickness and maternity pay as the company fights to regain its operating license in London.

A free insurance cover dubbed “Lifes up’s and downs” by Uber, will compensate drivers when sick, injured, when on jury service and when on maternity leave.

The commissions the drivers pay Uber will be used to fund the insurance cover, which will take effect from June 1.

Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi said: “Uber wouldn’t be what it is without drivers and couriers — they are at the heart of the Uber experience. We’re committed to being a better partner, and that starts by being a better listener.

“That’s why I’m thrilled to provide this groundbreaking protection alongside a trusted insurer like AXA, giving our drivers and couriers the peace of mind they tell us they want while preserving the flexibility they value. We’ll continue to ensure that the voices of the drivers and couriers are heard as we take Uber forward together.”

The cover will benefit around 70,000 drivers in Britain.
