Thunderstorms Cause Flight Cancellations at Stansted Airport

More than 150 Ryanair flights at Stansted Airport were yesterday cancelled or delayed due to stormy weather in London and South-East England.

Hundreds of passengers were left stranded after early morning heavy rain on Tuesday led to the cancellations.

Some passengers vented their frustration on Twitter. One passenger tweeted: “Arrived at Stansted to find my flight cancelled.  Massive queue only two staff. No refund for parking. Cannot talk to anyone about options. Ryanair asking people to go home rather than talk to them. Awful. Don't know what to do for best."

A spokesman for the airport said: “Following the thunderstorms across the south-east earlier today, subsequent airspace restrictions have limited the number of aircraft that can operate in and out of London Stansted Airport.

“This has meant knock-on delays to flights across the day and Ryanair has also taken the decision to cancel a number of its flights.

“We continue to advise any passenger due to travel to check the status of their flight with their airline before travelling to the airport as some delays and cancellations are possible, and the airline is best placed to provide the latest information and any updates.”

Ryanair said: “Due to thunderstorms in Stansted today, Ryanair have been forced to cancel a number of first wave flights.

“German, French, Greek and Croatian ATC staff shortages have also caused delays to 72 of our 441 first wave of flight departures this morning.

“Affected customers with cancelled flights will be notified by email and SMS text message and advised of their options of a refund or free move to the next available flight.

“Ryanair sincerely apologise for these weather and ATC disruptions which are entirely beyond our control.” The Sun reported.
