Transport for London Publishes ‘Vision Zero’ Plan to Stop Death and Injuries on London Roads

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, TfL and the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) have announced plans to subject all vehicles within the TfL Congestion Charging Zone to a 20miles per hour speed limit in order to eliminate death and injuries on London roads.

This is all part of a new plan called the “Vision Zero” which is predicated upon no death or serious injury is acceptable.

Every year, around 2,000 people either die or are seriously injured on London roads. The target is to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured by 65% by 2022, have zero number of people killed by a bus by 2030 and have zero deaths or injuries by 2041.

Mr. Khan said, “I don’t accept that deaths and serious injuries on London’s roads are something we have to put up with. Our bold and far-reaching plans are some of most ambitious in the world. At the heart of our plans is reducing the dangers of speeding vehicles across London. The design of vehicles is also crucial. That’s why we’re using the latest safety technologies to transform London’s buses and bringing in a world-leading safety standard for lorries, alongside investing in building new infrastructure to make walking and cycling a safe option.”

Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove, from the Metropolitan Police’s Road and Transport Policing Command, said: “The Met is working hard to reduce collisions and the number of people killed or seriously injured on London’s roads.

“We will contribute towards Vision Zero by intensifying our focus on the most dangerous drivers through the enforcement of road traffic legislation; the use of intelligence-led activity in problem locations; and we will conduct highly visible roadside operations and police patrols throughout London to amplify the deterrent effect.

“We want to remind all road users of the importance of keeping themselves safe while driving. Excess speed is an undisputed contributor to road collisions in London, and the consequences of these collisions can be devastating for those involved, their families, and communities.”

The Congestion Charging Zone covers 21-square kilometers of Central London, Mr. Khan said he will work with the boroughs to have a uniform 20mph introduced on all roads by 2024.
