Uber Makes App Changes over TfL Licensing Concerns

Uber has introduced new changes to its app in order to “make it clearer” to passengers that their drivers are licensed by Transport for London (TfL) and that Uber London handles all requests for rides before a driver is allocated.

This is the latest in a series of amendments announced by Uber following its license revocation by TfL last year.

Uber is in the process of appealing its license revocation with the next hearing date set for 25 June.

Once a passenger makes a booking, they will now receive a message informing them that Uber has received their booking and is finding them a driver. Passengers will receive details of their assigned driver. The information will include the drivers name, photo, private hire license number, car registration and confirmation that TfL had licensed their driver.

The ride-hailing app on its website said, “We’re making some changes to our app today which you may notice when booking a trip with Uber in London. The changes are aimed at making sure that passengers always know who has accepted their booking and who their driver is licensed by.

“From today, we will make it clearer to riders in London – once they have requested a car through our app – that Uber London has accepted their booking as the private hire operator.”

TfL welcomed the changes by saying, “We indicated in our decision letter concern over the process by which Uber accepted bookings. We welcome, therefore, that Uber has made changes to their app, which make it clear to passengers that Uber London has accepted the booking and that a TfL licensed driver will carry out the trip.”

Other changes that Uber announced include a pledge to report crimes directly to police and charging passengers who are eight minutes late for their journey, £6.
