Uber Tells Court It is Seeking Reforms in Face of London Ban

Uber told the Westminster Magistrates Court it has sought for “repair and reform” ahead of a crucial trial in June that will decide on whether Uber will continue operating in London.

Last year, Transport for London (TfL) announced that Uber’s license would not be renewed due to public safety concerns.

The ride-hailing app company has reduced the number of issues TfL has with its operations according to Philip Kovin, the company’s lawyer.

Kovin said the list of issues that will be heard during the company’s appeal case have dropped from 25 to 11.

Since its ban, Uber has changed the way it does business. The company improved its app by making sure its passengers know that all their bookings are accepted by Uber London and not individual drivers. Uber also introduced a 24/7 support hotline where passengers can report serious crimes which are then escalated to the Metropolitan Police. Further, the company has ceased opposing plans by TfL to introduce English language tests.

At the court hearing yesterday, Kolvin said Uber’s attitude to a “21-page letter” from TfL had been one of “repair and reform”.

“It has accepted a large number of those criticisms made by TfL, it admits it has failed in many respects,” he added. “It has apologised. It has made changes to the way it operates - it has changed its leadership, its directors.” City A.M reported.

According to a statement read by Mr Kolvin, TfL accepted changes had been made but felt “it is really for the court to decide whether, in light of the changes made, Uber is fit and proper”.
