Some are of the opinion that the UK should invest in both Gatwick and Heathrow. This follows on the heels of the news that Dubai has beat out Heathrow for the highest number of passengers this year. And Dubai still has plans for expansion.
Some think Dubai’s plans to expand are impractical because of the belief it’s not economically sound. Why not? It is currently very cheap to build in Dubai, money is very easy to come by and in the end, even with too much capacity, the expansion will help to reduce the price of travel for and export costs for Dubai. This seems to be more in line with looking toward the future. And for those with concerns about air and noise pollution; for a country that has made its money with oil, perhaps they see the future more clearly. Jets are becoming more fuel efficient and quieter and with the proper incentive, it’s only going to improve.
In London, these are the major concerns about expansion at either airport, but in reality it might possibly make more sense to go and expand at both airports. With increased capacity, at both, London can remain competitive, as well as being prepared for the future. As is the case with Dubai, they will be better able to handle exports, and over time reduce the cost of flight travel for passengers.
It’s something for them to think about, even though the current climate has everyone in UK pushing back and resisting the idea of expansion, because of cost, pollution, etc. Hopefully, they may take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
