Black Friday And Cyber Monday Hit The Uk Shores

Black Friday and Cyber Monday hit the UK shores

As Black Friday and Cyber Monday hit the UK shores, Christmas shopping for many people starts now!  As our wallets get ready for a big hit and we start to hunt out those fantastic bargains, we also take on board that there are only four Saturdays until Christmas!

Cyber Monday is not a UK phenomenon; it originates from the US and the term was created by Ellen Davis in 2005 as a ploy to encourage people to shop online the first day Monday following Thanksgiving – it wasn’t long before it became one of the biggest online shopping days.  It has since become an international event for online retailers and is fast spreading to the high streets in the form of Black Friday.

Black Friday is generally considered the day for technology deals – last year saw approximately 85% more bargains than Cyber Monday – whereas Cyber Monday is generally for online sales only and gives smaller retailers the chance to be with the ‘big boys’.  However, the big deals are no longer contained to just 24 hours; both events have become rather diluted as the retail sector looks to take advantage of the run up to Christmas with many sales lasting from Black Friday through to December – some retailers often open their doors 24 hours earlier.

There’s nothing like a sale to pique the interest in delving into our funds and purchasing a bargain.  However, is it really a bargain?  Some deals amount to just a 15-20% discount – is that really a mega deal in comparison to the January sales or even a summer sale?  Not really which begs the question, why are we spending our money at this wallet-tightening time of the year?  Well, the reason is probably down to clever marketing people who appeal to the side of our nature that loves a bargain!  And we do not disappoint.

But maybe we’re getting wise to this – last year saw spending in the US on Black Friday (a four-day event by the way!) fall for the first time in seven years to just $50.9 billion, representing a drop of 11%.  Whilst this disappointing news was put down to the ‘Christmas Creep’, many believe it was probably more down to the sale period lasting for longer and the general public getting wise.

So, before you delve deep into your hard-earned funds, be a little cautious – the deals will last longer than just 24 hours and remember, December is a long month!
