The airport commission that was set up by the government to do research has released its interim report. The commission was set up in 2012 by Sir Howard Davies.
One of the key findings is that expansion of the UK airports capacity would lead to an economy boost of up to £206 Million. The report also states that if the short term measures are considered, then Britain is set to achieve this economic boost by the year 2023.
The commission proposes using both runways at Heathrow airport for takeoff and for landing as one of the short term measures. They confirmed that if this mode of operation is adopted at Heathrow, massive GDP benefits would be a possible consequence.
At the moment, one runway is strictly used for departure while the other for arrivals.
Another proposal is to improve rail way links to major UK airports. They state that this would enhance punctuality of travelers, thereby reducing flight delays. The director of aviation, Mr. Gavin Hayes said he preferred to go with the long term proposals.
He stated that long term measures always have a way of offering long term solutions and bigger economic benefits. During the release, the transport department representative stated that though the UK aviation industry is doing well locally and globally, it was important to assess the growing aviation need now and in the future.
He went on to say that they are considering recommendations made in the report and would implement them if all goes well.
