British Airways Launches Direct Flights to Moscow and Durban

British Airways launched a flight from London Heathrow (LHR) to Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) in Russia, and another from Heathrow to King Shaka International Airport in South Africa.

The airline launched a morning, mid-morning and evening flight from Terminal 5 of Sheremetyevo International Airport —that is 29km northwest of central Moscow— to the Russian capital.

The first flight departed London Heathrow on Sunday 28th at 10:15 arriving in Moscow at 17:15. The airline is using the Airbus 321 for the route.

Joerg Tuensmeyer, Head of Sales for British Airways in Europe, said: “By changing one of our three daily flights to Sheremetyevo, we are opening up the north of the city for our Russian customers and giving more options to our UK-based travelers who need to get to that part of the city when they arrive into the capital. We know how precious time is, especially to our business customers and frequent flyers, so this change allows them to spend more time in the lounge working or relaxing.”

Denis Pashkovsky, Deputy General Director, Commercial Activities of Sheremetyevo International Airport, said: “Flights to The United Kingdom are highly demanded by business customers and frequent flyers. London is the world’s leading financial center for international business and commerce. We love and appreciate the British heritage and modern culture and are happy to assist in the development of mutually beneficial relations between the peoples of Russia and Great Britain. I am confident that the British Airways London-Moscow air bridge through Sheremetyevo Airport will become one of the most popular routes of the airline.”

“Sheremetyevo is thrilled once again to host direct flights from London, courtesy of British Airways,” said Alexander Ponomarenko, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Sheremetyevo. “We are committed to developing a strong business relationship with British Airways and the launch of these direct flights from Sheremetyevo is a positive step in that direction.”

In Durban, British Airway’s inaugural non- stop flight landed at King Shaka International Airport yesterday.

The new service will be operated three times a week and the airline will use the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner for the route.

British Airways Commercial Manager for Europe, Corporate Sales and Africa, Paolo de Renzis said, “Since we announced this new route in May, there’s been a great deal of excitement about it. The travel trade, business interests, government and the public all appreciate the benefits of the move. That’s why we’re especially pleased to be offering our most modern and comfortable aircraft on the route, and to connect two wonderful destinations with a direct flight between Terminal 5 and King Shaka International.”

KwaZulu-Natal minister of economic development and tourism, Sihle Zikalala said, “Having direct flights between Durban and London will undoubtedly spur growth in both tourism and trade for both destinations. We are certain that South Africans will embrace the opportunities offered by the direct flights. As a country we celebrated Tourism Month during September, highlighting the numerous attractions and activities that our people can explore. It is in the same warm spirit that we welcome travellers from the UK and invite them to explore and enjoy everything that Durban and the rest of the province of KwaZulu-Natal has to offer.”
