Flight Delay Stats for Major UK Airports

Fancy a holiday this summer? Be aware, some of London’s airports are the worst for flight delays. As long as you know who to avoid, or at least be prepared for it, then you can hope to keep the excitement for your summer holiday break. Here they are below.

A delay is considered as any delayed in takeoff of 15 minutes or more, and London did horribly with many of their delayed flights averaging over 23 minutes in delays. Here are the stats. Gatwick leads off with the worst record at 43%, Luton 32%, Jersey 30%, Heathrow 29%, and Manchester at 27%. Those are the top five worst offenders.

Only 23% of flights in all other airports outside of London were delayed. Overall flight delay in the country was at 27%. This increase is the highest it has been since 2010, and it is due in part to the increased numbers of passengers flying over the same period, from July through September. The number of passengers flying was 74 million last year which increased to 78 million this year flying over the same period.

Aviation authorities, look to the decrease in timeliness and the increase in passengers as a clear indication that the additional runway that is being delayed should be decided. With passenger numbers soaring, many airports are nearing their capacity, and with the length of time it takes to build a runway, this is an issue that is becoming more urgent with each additional delay.

It is now only a matter of months and we will see what they will do with regard to the third runway at Heathrow, then the effect this will have on flight delays.
