Londoners Bearing the World’s Most Expensive Monthly Transport Cost

A new study has found that London travelcards are the most expensive in the world. A monthly travelcard in London costs £135 on average, more than Dublin, which is the world’s most expensive.

According to the Deutsche Bank study, Mumbai has the cheapest public transport system, at just £11, 12 times less than London’s.

The study also revealed that three years ago, monthly travel in London was nearly twice as much as in New York.

Moreover, the capital has the tenth most expensive petrol prices and third most expensive car hires rates.

London is also the most expensive city for rent, and also among the ten most costly cities for gym memberships, cigarettes and hotel rooms.

Unfortunately, the research found, the high prices do not translate to high earnings for Londoners, whose average salaries no longer feature in the global top ten. The average monthly pay in the capital is £2,150, a third lower than in New York and below the average salaries in Sydney, Oslo, Copenhagen and Tokyo.

London was ranked in 33rd place for quality of life.

"London [and other big cities] rank very low mostly due to high living costs, crime, pollution and commuting time,” the report read.

Adding: “This is highly subjective and one person's long commute may be another person's chance to catch up on Netflix."

A TfL spokeswoman said: “The cost of transport should not be a barrier to study or work. Although the Mayor does not have the power to set Travelcard fares, all TfL fares have been frozen for the next four years, meaning that customers will not pay a penny more in 2020 than they did in 2016.

“We’re also making travel cheaper through the Bus Hopper fare, which allows for two bus journeys in the space of an hour for the price of one."
