Luton Airport has had its busiest September ever as more than 1.5 million passengers used the airport in September 2018 —a 3.9 increase compared to the same period last year.

Also, September was the 20th consecutive month that the airport served more than one million passengers.

The most popular holiday destinations were Amsterdam, Budapest, and Bucharest as most passengers took advantage of the remaining days of the summer holiday.

The airport is aiming to increase its capacity to 18million passengers per year by 2020 after a £160million revamp is complete.

The airport’s transformation is near completion and involves doubling the retail and dining space for passengers to enjoy more variety, and welcoming 30 new stores like Hugo Boss and Chanel.

The airport has also opened a new boarding pier to accommodate new routes for its airline partners and added more seats throughout the terminal.

In 2017, the airport served 15.8million passengers, which was an 8.6% increase from the previous year.

Nick Barton, CEO of LLA, said: “Passenger demand for air travel continues to grow, and our transformation will both help to meet this while making journeys easier, smoother and quicker.

“The opening of the terminal marks an important new chapter in our history, and the benefits will be felt by our passengers, staff and local community alike.” ‘

Luton is still the only airport without a direct express train. However, plans are under way to connect the airport to new rail links to Luton Airport Parkway station.

Luton has asked the government to introduce four trains per hour to the airport as part of a refranchising of the East Midlands rail line.
